This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is from Sherri Burns, submitted February 2004.

I grew up knowing him!

He was from Germany. I think he came to the US just before WWII. As far as I can recall, he never became a citizen, however, he also vowed to stay out of the politics of WWII.

He used to have an annual art show at his farm near Echo Lake, just outside of Johnsonville. I bought one of his charoals of "Podgee", the dog. His dog came to our house all the time and I'd take her home.

His second dog, Bella, was also another favorite visitor. When he passed away, Miss Lena, his housekeeper, gave her pastel picture to my mother to pass it on to me. They are much cherished. I have NO clue as to their worth.

I never missed his art show as a kid. I draw and paint myself and always loved his work. Mr. Heiden was a gentle man and I loved him dearly. I remember all of the people coming from NYC to his shows. He always took time out for my visits.

My fondest memory was buying the Podgee charcoal. I saw it the year before I bought it. I worked hard saving up money for that picture. I had $4.00 and went to the show. I asked him how much it was and he said $25. I was crushed. He asked me how much I had. When I told him $4.00, he said there must be a mistake. The picture was $4.00! When I look back on it today, I realize how special he was.

John Peter (J.P.) Heiden (1894-1986)

He was born in February of 1894 in Menden /Sauerland, Germany and died in August of 1986 in Johnsonville, Pennsylvania, near his farm in Bangor.

He received his schooling in Germany and can be seen as a representative of the "Düsseldorf Schule " of painting.  He was a philanthropist and emigrated to the U.S.A. between World Wars because of the political situation in Germany.  John Peter Heiden was a pacifist and liked people of all races and countries with all his heart.  When he was forced to be a soldier in World War I, it was completely against his religious faith and convictions.

He had many exhibitions in many parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Washington D.C., but also unconventionally, at his farm in the garden. He loved above other places in Europe the landscape of his beautiful surroundings in Pennsylvania, the farm and the Delaware Water Gap region and the Atlantic Ocean in the State of Maine.
