Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Jordanus Hoorn was born and died in Amersfoort, The Netherlands.  According to the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, Amsterdam, he was the son of a cloth merchant and later he became a pupil of the landscape painter Gerrit Toorenburgh (1732?/1785) and he worked in Haarlem between 1772-1795, including a period as drawing master for the Tekenschool voor Kunstambachten.  In 1795 under French rule, he returned to Amersfoort where he was appointed city drawing master.  His pupils were Jan van Ravenswaay, Jan Apeldoorn, and Christiaan Wilhelmus Moorrees.
