This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following information was submitted in February 2006 by Melissa Hinshaw-Owens, a Hinshaw family researcher from Ohio:

At the age of 19, Julia Hinshaw was shown in the 1880 census (June 11 1880) as living in a boarding house in Batavia, Genesee County, New York.

She later studied art with Charles Melville Dewey in New York and married her teacher on May 3, 1887.  She maintained a studio at 222 West 23rd St., New York City, which the census of  1890 showed as their address.

Julia exhibited at the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors (where she was one of the first presidents); the National Academy of Design from 1898; The Trans-Mississippi Expo, Omaha, Neb. in 1898.  She was a member of the National Arts Club, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the Society of American Artists.

Julia and Charles were shown in the 1910 census (Apr 30 1910), living in the Hotel Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City.  Julia was 38, Charles 60 years old, and they were married for 22 years, no children.  The 1920 census showed both at the same address, with their occupations being artists.  Julia F. Henshaw died Nov 5 1928; Charles died 1937.
