This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A resident of Bethany Beach on the Delaware shore, Laura Hickman works primarily in pastels to create landscape paintings that include her local surroundings and scenes from her travels to Europe. Many of her works depict "gently aging buildings" along Delaware shores, and she also has been fascinated with the countryside of Tuscany from her stay in Italy in May, 2001. From oil and watercolor sketches she did during that trip, she did 40 large pastel works in her studio. None of them have figures but feature the intense light and spacial qualities of the landscape.

She prefers finishing her paintings in the studio, a habit she acquired from her training as a printmaker. Also pastel melts in heat so she needs a controlled environment.
