Biography from Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery Santa FeTucson:
Hosmer was born in Lamberton, Minnesota and moved with his family to California in 1903. He enrolled in the California School of Fine Arts in 1917, studying with Frank Van Sloun and Lee Randolph. In 1930 Hosmer moved to Lodi, California and established a vineyard which he managed while continuing to paint. He was the fine arts director of the Lodi Grape Festival and National Wine Show from 1950 to 1977. In the 1950s Hosmer restored a Gold Rush-era building in the ghost town of Volcano and opened the Cobblestone Gallery in it. Hosmer worked primarily in oil, painting impressionistic landscapes of the Sierra Nevada, Monument Valley, Owens Valley and the gold mining country of the Sierra foothills.

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Landscape painter. Born in Lamberton, MN on April 5, 1895. Hosmer moved to California with his family in 1903. In 1917 he enrolled at the CSFA where he learned to paint from teachers Van Sloun, Randolph, and Martinez. In 1930 he settled in Lodi, CA and lived there for his remaining years. Combining a career as both artist and vinyardist, from 1950 until 1977 he was the fine arts director of the Lodi Grape Festival and National Wine Show. After restoring a 112-year-old building in Volcano (CA), he operated the Cobblestone Gallery there for many years. Hosmer died in Lodi on July 25, 1984. His paintings were inspired by the Mother Lode area, Monument Valley, Owens Valley, and the Sierra Nevada. His early landscapes are more somber; during his later years he used a brighter palette.
