Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter, illustrator, pastelist. Born in Puyallup, WA on April 22, 1892. Holmwood began painting as a child and by age 15 was an accomplished artist. He and his three brothers were taught to play musical instruments by their father and traveled about as a band playing for dances and proms. After joining the Navy in 1918, he played in the band and upon discharge studied at the AIC. By the early 1930s he had settled in Laguna Beach into the former studio-home of Edgar Payne where he painted portraits and did covers for Colliers, Country Gentlemen, Literary Digest, and others. A world traveler, he visited Lapland, India, Sweden, Tahiti, and Hawaii. In his later years he also owned property near Lake Tahoe where he was known as 'The Old Man of the Mountain.' Holmwood died in Laguna Beach on March 9, 1985. Exh: Laguna Beach AA, 1941. In: Orange Co. (CA) Museum. AAA 1925; Invw.
