This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is from Damaris Reynolds:

Mr. and Mrs. Hatch were close friends of my parents in China in 1910 till
his death in China in 1914. Mrs. Hatch remained a close friend. Mr Hatch
was employed by the US Bureau of Printing and Engraving, I don't know
if he did coins or paper money. When the Chinese decided they wanted to
establish a modern currency system, they hired Lorenzo Hatch to come
to Peking.

He was born in Dorset, VT and the history of the town contains references to him. I believe some of his work hangs at the Smithsonian. I have a painting he did of a bridge in China bridge in China and a photograph of the Hatches and my parents having a picnic beside this bridge.
