The source of the following information is the artist's obituary in The Evening Independent, St. Petersburg, Florida, December 9, 1933.

Louis (Ludwig) J. Heitmuller, West Ohio Street, N.S.  Pittsburgh.  Born at Klein Palubin, Poland, May 24, 1863.  Pupil of Royal Academy of Fine arts, in Dusseldorf; studied at Beaux Arts, Geneva, Switzerland 1 year, Munich 1 year and Paris.  In the United States 1893.  Traveled and painted through Europe and lived and painted in South America for 2 ½ years; lived and painted at Algiers, Africa 1 year.  Exhibited in the First International at Carnegie Art Gallery, Pittsburgh, in 1895 and exhibited in Paris, Dusseldorf and Munich.

Louis J. Heitmuller   (1863 – 1933)

Mr. Heitmuller came to St. Petersburg, Florida, just a week prior to his death on December 7, 1933.  He was a landscape and portrait painter, having studied in Dusseldorf and Munich, Germany and Paris, France. His first work was done in North Africa.  He painted a collection of landscape scenes and portraits descriptive of Arabic life which was done for an art academy in Germany. He spent much of his time in Brazil, South America, and lived for two years in Switzerland and for the last ten years had been painting Biblical scenes for Pittsburgh churches.  Much of his portrait work was done in Germany.   Mr. Heitmuller was prominently mentioned in Who’s Who and was well known in Pittsburgh art circles.

Joyce M. Van Kirk Muldoon, descendant of the artist, provided the following information: "My mother always referred to him as Uncle Ludwig.  So, I believe the person you refer to as Louis Heitmuller is actually Ludwig Heitmuller.  He was my mother's great uncle.  My mother's mother and uncle were Heitmuller's who emigrated from Germany around the turn of the century."

Biography from Annaliza's Fine Art:
Louis Heitmuller, known by his family as Ludwig Heitmuller, studied at the Royal Academy in Munich and at the Ecoles des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Carnegie Institute and the Society of Independent Artists. He came to the U.S. in 1893 and settled in Pittsburgh. He painted many works of the steel mills on the Pittsburgh River.
