This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The noted Quaker artist Lucy Dennis Holme was born in 1848 at "Holmeland" in Elsinboro, Salem County, New Jersey to Benjamin and Elizabeth Dennis Holme.  She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with William Sartain and Thomas Eakins, and is believed to have continued her studies in Paris with Gustave Courtois and Jean Andre Rixens.  In 1889-91 she painted the French countryside and traveled to Italy and Holland.

Holme exhibited a painting of three girls at a table, titled A Holiday Occupation, at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.  The painting is now owned by the Salem County Historical Society.  After her studies abroad Holme taught in Philadelphia, eventually retiring to her hometown of Salem, New Jersey, where she died in her home on the north side of Broadway.

“Palettes of the Past: Salem County Art and Artists. An exhibit of Paintings Presented by the Salem County Historical Society” (Salem, NJ: unpublished exhibition catalogue, March – December 2010), 40 pages.
