This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Lylian Root Hulbert   (1872 -   )

Born Sept 19, 1872, Kent, Ohio, Lylian Hulbert was the daughter of James C. and Adda (Root) Hulbert.  Her family appears to have migrated West, for, by the time of the 1880 Census, they are living in Shiloh Township, Grundy, Iowa, where her father was a farmer.

According to her passport application in 1920, she had graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, was shown as a decorative designer, and the reason given for the application at that time was for art study in Italy, France and England.

The 1910 Census lists her as an artist, associated with the Art Institute and living in Chicago.  That next year, 1911, she is noted as a member of the Atlan Club, a society of china painters whose professional membership is limited to 25, and established in Chicago in 1893. She was also apparently closely associated with the art scene as she later gave her home address as the University of Chicago on her passport as late as 1942.
