Painter, draughtsman and printmaker Margarethe E. Heisser was born March 31, 1871, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she grew up. One of the first woman artists to paint western subjects in the upper Mid-West, she died tragically at the young age of thirty-seven. As early as 1897 she exhibited a drawing of Thunder Cloud, a Sioux Indian, at the annual exhibition of the Minneapolis Art League.
