Margery Lang Hamilton (1908-1997), American Painter

Margery Lang Hamilton was born in Barnet, Vermont on May 4, 1908, but, lived primarily most her adult life in Plymouth, Massachusetts.  She graduated from Johnsbury Academy in 1925, and, later studied art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and under famous artist Hans Hoffman from 1926 to 1933.  Hamilton received a scholarship during her final year to travel in Paris, France and Florence, Italy to study art.  On her return from Europe, she was one of four Vermont recipients awarded a WPA grant to create municipal works of art.  Her three murals at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum are still on display.  She painted hundreds of portraits and landscapes around Plymouth, N.H., and places that she visited throughout New England.

She married later in life and sometimes went by the name Mrs. H. H. Hamilton.  Mrs. Hamilton was known to have had exhibited her work at a solo exhibition in Plymouth in 1937.  Her works are represented at the Boston Athenaeum and at St. Johnsbury, Vermont.  She was best known as a portrait and landscape artist.

Margery Lang Hamilton died in Plymouth, Massachusetts on October 23, 1997.
