Mary Hiester Reid

Born –  Reading,Pennsylvania, United States, 1854
Died –  Toronto, Ontario, 1921

While studying at the Pennsylvania Academy, Mary Hiester met and later married the Canadian artist George Agnew Reid.  The couple moved to Toronto in 1885, and lived on Indian Road and later in Wychwood Park.  During each summer between 1891 and 1916, they lived in their home at Onteora, New York.

The couple traveled five times to Europe, where Reid studied at the Academy Colarossi*, Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands.  Reid showed almost every year with the Royal Canadian Academy* and the Ontario Society of Artists*.

She was a prolific and financially-successful artist and was best known and most admired for her paintings of flowers, which received extensive reviews in the Toronto press.  She also had a career as a teacher, but this part of her life has been little-documented.  A retrospective show of her work held in 1922, the year following her death, at the Art Gallery of Toronto, included over 300 works.
