This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Post War California artist, Mel Hanson studied at University of Pacific, Stockton. Hanson was a member of the 'Fyrehaus Group', that included William Snyder, Jack Farloux (Farley), Terry St. John and Jim Muhs, who shared an old firehouse in Stockton as their studio until 1961. Hanson was highly influenced by the German expressionists creating highly sophisticated abstract, pop and figurative works during his brief but highly productive artistic career as he exhibited frequently in the Green and Spatsa Galleries near Union Street in San Francisco in the early 1960's. Hanson showed signs of artistic brilliance as a child and hit his stride in 1959/60 when he began to paint thick, heavy, juicy figurative works predating and influencing Joan Brown's 1961-62 thick paint on canvas figurative paintings. His paintings are rare and highly sought after.

Selected Exhibitions: Spatsa Gallery, 1960, 'Fyrehaus Group' Exhibition; Green Gallery, 1961, 'Fyrehaus Group' Exhibition; Green Gallery, 1960, 1961, Group Exhibition; University of the Pacific, Retrospective Exhibition, 1963; Green Gallery, Retrospective Exhibition, 1964.
