This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Vermont and raised in New York City ,Michael Hoffman received instruction from an early age from his Uncle Irwin D. Hoffman, a portrait artist in classical art technique.

Upon moving to Florida in 1967, Hoffman's life took a dramatic turn when he began work as a mate on a Miami based charter fishing boat. Everyday became an exciting new adventure and encounters with billfish, sharks, and other game fish became the foundation and inspiration for a life long career as a marine wildlife artist. As time moved on, Mr. Hoffman was privileged to fish for the Marlin and Giant Tuna that were then plentiful in nearby Bahamian waters. As a crewman, Michael was an integral part of many significant catches including the 1976 Bahamas record Giant Tuna, weighing 934 lbs.

In 1978 a full-time career as a fine artist replaced Big Game fishing as Mr. Hoffman's vocation. Since then the artist has focused on recreating his experiences both old and new on canvas with special attention on the coral reef, big game fishing and the Florida landscape. Always broadening his horizons through travel, Michael's paintings are ever evolving in subject matter, technique and medium. Many of his canvases belong to celebrities and collectors of note to include the actor Burt Reynolds, former President George Bush, Sr. and John Mecam former owner of the New Orleans Saints football team.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
At age 17, Michael Hoffman, his mother and sister, moved from New York to Key Biscayne, Florida. This new environment was a dreamland for the budding young wildlife artist. Here he was able to observe first-hand all forms of marine and tropical wildlife on a daily basis.

Previously an avid fisherman, he turned to full-time painting in 1977, but continued to make frequent trips to the Caribbean and South America to study new and exotic marine life. In 1981, Hoffman moved from Key Biscayne to Stuart, Florida. Smitten with the island-feel of his new home, he settled into a 12-14 per hour day painting schedule.

Working on several large canvases at a time, Hoffman paints in a round-robin fashion, detailing one canvas while under-painting another. He also makes time for field sketching and study, something was not difficult since he lives on a pristine beach and any of his subjects can be observed from his studio window where some of his best compositions have been inspired. "Dolphins, pelicans, herons, sharks, rays and on occasion, even humpback whales are regular visitors to the waters directly off my balcony", he says. Hoffman, who is collected by art connoisseurs, sports fisherman and environmentalists alike, has several new projects on the drawing board.
