Biography from Johns' Western Gallery:
Michael Horse is of Yaqui, Mescalero Apache, Zuni, European and Hispanic descent. Born in Arizona, he comes from an artistically talented family who taught him that one cannot be a whole and healthy individual without art in one's life.  As he grew up, he was taught how important the creative spirit is for the well being of the human soul.

Every day, through Horse's art and the art of others, he is reminded of the connection to his heritage, culture, other people, and his soul.  Horse's creativity is channeled into many roles including: painter, actor, powwow dancer, activist, and musician.

Well known for his role as Deputy Hawk on TV's "Twin Peaks," Horse claims visual art as his first passion.  He has produced sculptures, paintings, and jewelry, some of which has been shown at the Smithsonian.  Currently, Horse has a significant role in the popularity of ledger art, paintings that originated in the 19th century.
