Palmer Hayden was one of two first recipients for the Harmon Foundation's Award for Artistic Achievement in 1926. His oil painting was titled "The Schooners." The Harmon Foundation, created by real estate barron William Harmon, was one of the first organizations to nationally encourage, publicize and tour artwork created by African Americans. After winning this honor, Hayden sold "The Schooners" and from the buyer's patronage money, went abroad to study art.
