Born in Gardiner, Maine on April 23, 1845, Holmes was the son of Philip
C. and Sarah A Holmes. Philip C. Holmes operated a machine shop
and foundry at Water and Winter Streets in Gardiner, and Philip H.
Holmes kept his studio on his father’s property. The younger
Holmes began selling his landscape paintings in 1868, remaining active
as an artist into the early 1880’s.
In 1868 Holmes painted in the White Mountains with the noted Hudson
River school artist Willi (showing 500 of 1293 characters). |
