Most often associated with Connecticut, Philip Hewins is noted for his portraits and religious paintings. He was raised in Blue Hill, Maine, and then moved to the outskirts of Boston where he worked in a dry goods business. From there he relocated to Albany, New York, where he studied portraiture with local artist Reuben Roulery. Soon he was executing portraits of his own.
Hewins moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1834, and there he had a successful career as a portrait painter until his d (showing 500 of 908 characters). |
