Biography from Butler's Fine Art:
Phyllis Skolnick Hirschbergt studied at The Art Students League, and graduated from Cooper Union, NYC, in 1946. She studied with Will Barnett, Robert Gwathmey and Morris Kantor.

She describes her art as a combination of German Expressionism, Japanese Woodblocks, Matisse, and the carnival-like atmosphere of Coney Island. She also cites a long-time interest in Chinese calligraphy. A series of woodblock prints from 1946 depicting scenes from Candide by Voltaire are in the collection of The New York Public Library, 42nd Street Branch. The series had been exhibited in 1946 at The Argent Gallery in New York City, together with woodblock prints by German artist Kathe Kollwitz.
