This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Ralph Himmelberger, Sr. (1887-1951)

Born in 1887, in Reading, Pennsylvania, he showed an early interest in art.  At age 13 he was told by his mother that he better get painting out of his head because artists were all tramps and vagrants.  Consequently, he became an optometrist but started painting again at the age of 52.

His work was widely exhibited in local and national shows, including the National Academy of Design, Allied Academy, Audubon Artists, St. Louis Museum, and in Montclair, Newark, Plainfield, Union and Irvington, New Jersey.  He had three solo shows including an exhibition at the Irvington Public Library and a four person show at the Newark Art Club.

Also an actor, Dr. Himmelberg was active on the stage, playing many leading and supporting roles with the Orange Little Theater group.  He sang solos with choirs in Newark churches and an accomplished accordionist, led his own orchestra at one time.
