Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
A painter and etcher, Robert Harshe was born in Salisbury, Missouri on May 26, 1879.  He studied at Art Institute of Chicago, Art Students League in New York City, University of Missouri, Teachers College of New York under Arthur Dow, Century School of Arts & Crafts in London, and Académie Colarossi in Paris.

He was a resident of the San Francisco Bay area during 1908-16.  While in California, he co-founded the California Society of Etchers (1913) and served as its first president.

He was assistant chief in the department of fine arts at the Panama Pacific Exposition of (1915) and was assistant professor of graphic arts at Stanford University.  By 1917 he was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and during his last 20 years, he was a resident of Chicago and director of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Harshe died there on Jan. 11, 1938.
