Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
A sculptor and painter, Robert Boardman was born in New York City on September 20, 1896, the son of Mary Bradbury and architect John Galen Howard.  At six years of age Robert Howard moved to Berkeley, CA with his family.  Upon graduating from Berkeley High School, his art studies were at the California School of Arts and Crafts under Xavier Martinez, University of California under Worth Ryder and Perham Nahi, and with Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League in New York City.

After serving in the Army in WWI, Howard studied art in Paris at Academies Colarossi and Grande Chaumière.  Returning to San Francisco in 1922, he exhibited with his brothers Charles and John at the Modern Gallery, and married sculptor Adaline Kent in 1930.

He contributed fountain groups, murals, reliefs, and decorative maps to the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939, and taught at Mills College (1940s) and at the California School of Fine Arts from 1945-61.

An exponent of modern art and a world renowned artist, he lived most of his life in San Francisco.  Howard died in Santa Cruz, CA on Feb. 18, 1983.

His best known works in San Francisco are the black granite whales in front of the California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park; the bas reliefs on the Pacific Stock Exchange and PG&E Bldg at 8th and Mission.
