This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Robert Friedl Heinecken was born in Denver, Colorado on October 29, 1931.  Heinecken grew up in Riverside, California and earned his M.A. at UCLA in 1960.  He then founded the photography department at UCLA and taught there for 31 years.  From 1996 to 2004 he taught photography at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Retrospectives of his work were held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 1999 and University of Arizona in 2003.  He died in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 19, 2006.
