Biography from Brock & Co.:
Roswell Hill was born in Lawrence, Kansas in 1861. His parents were both from Massachusetts and had moved to Kansas in the late 1850s. Hill began his artistic career as a portrait painter. He studied at The Art Students League in New York and then went to Paris where he began to paint in an impressionist style. This was particularly true of his landscapes. In Paris he studied under Jean Leon Gerome and William Bougeureau. Returning to the United States he settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut and exhibited widely in the 1890s and early 1900s. Venues included the New York Watercolor Club, Society of American Artists and the Salmagundi Club among others. Hill died unexpectedly of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1907.
