This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Samuel F. Hershey studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts*, Boston Museum School of Art, and with New Haven Paint & Clay Club* members Aldro Hibbard and William Lester Stevens. 

He exhibited his paintings nationally during the 1920’s and 1930s before he began his teaching career.  At Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, he taught from 1937 to 1942; at the Rhode Island School of Design, from 1946 to 1969; and at the University of California (Berkeley) until his retirement in 1971.

A New Haven Paint & Clay Club member from 1933 to 1949, Samuel Hershey exhibited paintings of still life, landscape and figure studies.  He was awarded the John I.H. Downes Landscape Prize for his work, October Afternoon in 1932.

Sam Hershey was born in Peru, Indiana, and attended Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, The Grand Central School of Art in New York City, the Boston Museum School of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. 

Mr. Hershey moved to Rockport in the mid 1920's, where he studied with Lester Stevens, Aldro T. Hibbard, and ran the Sandy Bay Art School with another prominent Rockport artist, Stanley Woodward. 

Hershey made good use of the WPA era, painting murals in public buildings in Rockport and beyond.

In 1947 Hershey took over the position of President of th Rockport Art Association, which he occupied for four years.  After WWII, he taught painting and design at the Rhode Island School of Design until his retirement.  According to the artist's obituary in the Boston Globe, Sam Hershey passed away in September of 1987.
