This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography is from Thomas Hutchings, third great grandson of Stephen B. Hutchings.

Stephen Brown Hutchings was born January 18, 1795, on Division Street in the Bowery, New York City. He resided in Manhattan for most of his life. He died in Bloomfield, New Jersey, on June 12, 1885 at the age of 90.

He first began his artistic career around the age of 17.  The 1812 New York City directory lists Steph. B. Hutchings as a portrait painter, living at Walker, corner of Church, in Manhattan. He is listed as a portrait painter up until 1843, when the New York City directory lists him as an (real estate) “agent.”

In 1841, at the age of 46, he was appointed as a Commissioner of Deeds in New York City. There is no reference to his painting afterwards.

In an 1813 advertisement in the New York Advertiser, the following is found: “Portrait and Miniature Painting executed with neatness, accuracy and dispatch, at No. 207 Church street, by S.B. Hutchings” published November 24th.

"The Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America Exhibition Tour", lists a portrait of Rev. Myles Cooper (1737-1785) by S.B. Hutchings; after John Singleton Copley (1738-1815). The portrait of Rev. Cooper is an oil on canvas, 1820, and owned by the New York Historical Society. It was a gift to the Society by Nicholas William Stuyvesant.

In 1825, another advertisement reads, “We have seen a beautiful engraving by Durand of the Rev. Dr. Romeyn, which is offered for sale at one dollar, by S.B. Hutchings, No. 35 Cedar street.”

In The Buffalo Almanac, Vol. IV, No. 11, Friday, March 24, 1826, reference is made to the engraved portrait of Rev. Dr. Milnor of New York.  The provider of this information is the third great grandson of Stephen B. Hutchings. It was discovered by this writer that miniature portraits of his parents Samuel Hutchings (1761-1830) and Lois Whitehead Hutchings (1764-1825) were in the collection of the New England Genealogical and Biographical Society. The actual dates of the portraits are unknown, but are estimated about 1820. High resolution digital photographs of the miniature portraits were provided to this writer by the NEG&BS. Larger oil on canvas reproductions of the portraits are in the personal collection of this writer.

Stephen B. Hutchings’ son, Anthony Bleecker (A.B.) Hutchings (1827-1902), was also a portrait painter and Daguerreian from about 1853 to after the Civil War, when he settled into work as a real estate agent in New York City.
