Biography from Tree's Place Gallery:
Steve Hawley maintains a studio in Massachusetts where he lives.  Born in 1950, he attended the School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and taught painting and drawing at the Museum of Fine Arts as well as at Tufts University.

Hawley developed his own unique technique of painting with highly thinned multiple layers (or skins) of oil, oil combined with wax, and oil combined with alkyd the result of many years of experimentation.  Although Hawley works from life, his technique often produces results that are so realistic that it might appear to have been produced by a photograph rather that with a brush and easel.

Hawley has had solo exhibitions in Boston, New York, Connecticut, Tokyo, and Chicago.  His paintings are part of the collections of many major museums including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.
