A well-known architect, he worked in the office of McKim, Mead, and White, New York City, and in 1886 went into partnership with John M. Carrère. They designed the New York Public Library and the Metropolitan Opera House. Hastings's designs after the death of Carrère (1911) include the Memorial Amphitheater in the National Cemetery at Arlington, Virgina.
