A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (b.1823), Thomas Hicks began as a coach painter. A portrait he completed of his employer convinced his father he should study art. As early as 1836 he received his first instruction in painting from his cousin, Edward Hicks, whose portrait he painted the following year.
Hicks then went to the Pennsylvania Academy and later to the National Academy of Design in New York. At age 18, he was elected an Associate of the Academy for his work, "Death of Abe (showing 500 of 1025 characters). |
