This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following biography, submitted December 2004, is from Vicki Haas, wife of the artist whose website is http://www.tom-haas.com

Painter Tom Haas offers views of the American landscape, particularly the Southwest. Sometimes other subjects appear in his work such as small towns or early pueblo life to ranches and animals. His brush strokes portray light, form, color and atmosphere in addition to allowing the viewer to see the process of painting. He often works en plein air, a French term for in the open air.

The National Park Academy of the Arts recognized Tom Haas as "being in the top echelon of representational artists working today", with its Award For Excellence in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Home National Bank acquired two paintings by Haas for their offices in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2002. And the year before, MBNA America Bank collected more than 30 paintings by this artist.

The U.S. Department of State's regional office in Vienna, Austria, introduced one of Haas' Southwest landscape paintings to a global audience with its 2004 calendar. That painting was, also, published on the cover of the "Geneva Art In Embassies" catalog and is one of two oils by Haas now on exhibit at The Residence of the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. As a result, Tom was a guest at The White House, Washington, D.C., in 2004.

Tom Haas studied oil painting with many North American painters, such as Duane Bryers, Len Chmiel, William Reese, Mark Daily, George Strickland, Dan Mieduch and James Reynolds, at the Scottsdale Artists School where Haas also became a painting instructor.

In the 90's, Tom was Director of Design for a firm in the commercial interiors and exhibit industry. He still has an active special interest in architectural, landscape and interior design.

"Art of the West" magazine introduced Tom Haas to its readers in November 1996. In 1997, Haas won "Best of Show" at a Tucson Museum of Art exhibition and received his second Phippen Foundation Award in Prescott, Arizona, for museum quality (first time in 1995). And upon returning to the Phippen Western Art Show in 2004, he won First Place in Drawing.

In 1998, Tom's work was featured in the first issue of "International Artists" magazine. It also appeared in a book titled "Art of the American West" and in "Southwest Art" magazine's Best of the West section (May and Sept. issues). Later that year, he was inducted as an Honorary Artist Life Member of the Mountain Oyster Club in Tucson, Arizona. In recent years, Haas's oil paintings have been exhibited at several museums including Arizona's Pueblo Grande, Sharlot Hall, Phippen and the Tucson Museum of Art.

One-man shows include the Flagstaff Ranch Golf Club in 2004, and group shows include the 2005 Arizona Fine Art EXPO.

Early exposure to paintings by N.C. Wyeth, through books and feed and grain calendars, ignited Haas's drive and confidence to learn about art and express himself visually. but Tom is most inspired by time spent outdoors capturing nature's light, color and form.
