This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Described as a "modern primitive" with a Pointilliest style, Thorvald Hoyer did painting as a hobby while making money at menial jobs to support his Hungarian wife, Regina Dicker, and his stepdaughter.  In fact, the only time he made money from his artwork was during the 1930s when he participated in the Federal Art Project, a division of the WPA (Works Progress Administration).

His early work was exhibited in Chicago in 1944 in the galleries of Marshall Field & Company.  Although his paintings resembled those of French painter, Georges Seurat (1859-1891), Hoyer claimed that his primary influence was George Inness (1824-1894).  However, the style and titles of Hoyer's paintings were distinctly American, such as Ma, the Rain's Coming.

Thorvald Hoyer was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1872, and at age 30, immigrated to Chicago, Illinois.  Exhibition venues include the Art Institute of Chicago, Walley Findlay Galleries of Chicago, Theobald Gallery of Chicago, Milwaukee Art Museum, Chicago Public Library Memorial Exhibit, Illinois Arts Council, Museum of Modern Art in New York, the University of Minnesota, and the St. Louis Art Museum.

His work is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois State Museum, Museum of Modern Art and Smithsonian Institution.
