This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in 1973 in Southeastern Oklahoma, Travis Hall grew up with a enthusiasm for color and the surrounding natural landscape. Raised in an artistic household, Hall started expressing himself in drawings at an early age.  In 1992, he moved to Dallas, Texas where his interest in pursuing his dream of painting grew fervent.  Foregoing a formal art education, Hall purchased the art supplies that would profoundly splash the canvas and confirm his calling.

Hall soon found himself fascinated by the techniques used by the great classical painters.  His imagination was captured by Tonalism; a style of painting which involves the layering of complimentary colors, one over the other, to create subtle color modulations.  Though time consuming, Hall devoted himself to creating a tonalistic technique that would give a luminosity to his paintings that would instill them with an attribute reminiscent of the Old Masters.

In his quest to further enlighten his artistic ability, Hall moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1997 to apprentice under the artist, Poteet Victory.  There, he worked on his Tonalistic method and learned other techniques to compliment and add surface interest to his painting.  During this time, Hall's work, a series of landscapes, was largely comprised of his remembrances of his native countryside.

Hall's love and curiosity for times past inspired a series of work that incorporated architectural elements. The addition of gold leaf or other classical design motifs is intended to bestow a sense of history to the artwork.

Hall continues to paint the rural landscapes that so inspired him as a child. In 2001, he was motivated by time spent in Carmel, California and painted his first seascapes, which have been enthusiastically received. In 2003, he moved to Carmel.
