Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Architect, painter, illustrator. Born in Prussia in 1834. Hoffman's early life and education remain unknown. He first appeared in San Francisco in 1853 as an artist for local wood engravers. His 1856 view of Sacramento was published by the Britton & Rey Lithographers and a view of San Francisco was published by Hutchings & Rosenfeld in 1858. His illustrations also appeared in Hutchings Illustrated California Magazine. Active as an architect in San Jose during 1870-75, Hoffman then returned to San Francisco. In the 1890s he was the architect for the San Francisco City Hall which was destroyed in 1906. His track is lost after that time; he may have returned to his native land. Exh: Mechanics' Institute (SF), 1857, 1858. In: Oakland Museum (Indians on San Francisco Bay). AAW; G&W; SF Bulletin, 10-8-1905.
