The following biography is from Lee Morrison, author of a biography on Walter Hook, The Art of Walter Hook.

Walter Hook, painter and printmaker, was a Montana native.  He received his Masters Degree in Art from the University of New Mexico in 1950, and was hired as chair of the University of Montana Art Department.

Walter Hook received some 90 awards from juried exhibitions and had over 80 one- man shows.  In 1972 he was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design, the nation's oldest artist's honorary organization.

His mediums painting, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking.

His style is post-war surrealism.

Born in Missoula, Montana in 1919.

Studied at the University of New Mexico.

Faculty member or visiting artist at the following : University of Montana, 1955 to present; University of New Mexico; University of Oregon; University of Washington; Central Washington State College; University of Alberta, Washington; Spokane Art Center, Spokane Washington; Mission Mountain College in Polson, Montana; Pacific Guild Artists in Tacoma, Washington.

Awards : Alabama Water Color Society Annuals; California National Watercolor Society; Las Vegas Art League National Arts Roundup Annuals; Watercolor U.S.A.; Oklahoma Printmakers Club Society Annuals; Pacific Northwest Art Exhibition; First National Bank Exhibition; 164th Annual of Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Philadelphia Watercolor Award; California National Watercolor Award Annuals; Seattle Art Museum; Centennial National Exhibit.

Exhibits : (one-man) Washington State University; Univesity of Wyoming; Central Washington State; Pacific Lutheran College; University of Oregon; Carthage Collge; Knox College; University of Idaho; Penn State University; University of North Dakota; Butler Institute of American Art; Hockaday Memorial Center for the Arts; Yellowstone Center for the Arts.
