This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Hopkington, NH on Nov. 2, 1826. Herrick worked in Manchester, NH during 1846-47. Joining the Gold Rush, he left Boston on the Westward Ho and sailed to San Francisco in 1853 where he remained. During the 1850s his engravings appeared in Hutching's California Magazine; after joining the staff of the Alta California, he became editor in 1855 and later worked as a staff artist on the Evening Bulletin. Herrick soon became one of the leading businessmen in the city with interests in real estate, insurance, and finance. Although busy with commerce, he often exhibited oils and watercolors in local exhibitions. Prominent in the local art scene, he helped establish the San Francisco School of Design in 1874. Herrick died in San Francisco on Sept. 28, 1906 having earned a place in California history as an outstanding pioneer and artist. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1857; Calif. Art Union, 1865; SFAA, 1872-74.
