This biography from the Archives of AskART:
William Granville Hastings was born in Kennington, Surrey, England on August 23, 1868.

He attended the Lambeth Art School, and worked for Doulton at their Lambeth works as a designer and modeler.

He specialized in large and small vases in classical and renaissance styles.  He was honored with a Society of Arts first prize for one of his vases in 1889.

In 1891 he immigrated to the USA to work as a designer and sculptor for the Gorham Manufacturing Company in New York.  His first task was to design works for display at the World’s Fair held in Chicago in 1893.

William later created public monuments such as the Soldiers and Sailors monument at Pawtucket, Rhode Island; Freedom Arming the Patriot also in Rhode Island; the Lincoln Monument at Cincinnati, Ohio and his most famous work Lincoln the Orator.

He was an active member of the Providence Art Club.

William died in Mount Vernon, New York on June 13, 1902.
