A sketch artist known for his views of early California, William Rich arrived in April 1847 in Monterey to serve as a clerk for his uncle, William Rich, a paymaster of the U.S. Volunteer Troops during the Mexican War.
In 1849, he accompanied Edward Ord on the surveying of Los Angeles and from 1850 to 1851, was surveyor for San Luis Obispo. He did numerous watercolor sketches of California towns, missions, and ranches, and his 1847 and 1852 views of Los Angeles are among the earliest of t (showing 500 of 2174 characters). |
