Born in 1933 in Toronto, Canada, he graduated from the London School of Art in London, Ontario, in in 1952. His family moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1953, and Irwin joined the U.S. Army in 1955, serving for three years. He continued his art studies in Germany and at the University of California in Berkeley, joining the editorial art staff at the San Francisco Examiner in 1958.
