Biography from AskART:
Born in Leipzig, Germany on April 23, 1846. As a teenager Linna studied art in Leipzig. Arriving in San Francisco about 1864, she continued at the School of Design under Virgil Williams, Jorgensen, and Yelland. After her marriage to Wm J. Irelan, she lived at 1415 Geary Street and maintained a studio at 3244 20th Street on the corner of Treat where she made hand-painted Roblin Art Pottery. She claimed to be the first white woman in California to work with pottery. Her specialties were floral still lifes, portraits, and landscapes in oil and watercolor. Her rare works are realistically depicted in the style of the English School; many were lost in the earthquake and fire of 1906. Two of her known paintings are signed "L. F. Ireland." Mrs. Irelan died in Berkeley, CA on March 25, 1935. Exh: Calif. Art Union, 1865 (Near Crystal Springs and Santa Clara Valley); Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1871-88; SFAA, 1873-1906; Calif. State Fair, 1882-89; SF Women Artists, 1914. In: St Mary's College (Moraga, CA).
