Albertus Eugene Jones (American, 1882-1957)

Albertus Jones was born on October 31, 1882 and lived in South Windsor, Connecticut.  He studied under Charles Noel Flagg and attended the Connecticut League of Art Students.  Jones was not only a painter but also an instructor of drawing and painting and taught at the Hartford Art School for 20 years and several other nearby schools and universities.  He was a member of several organizations including the WPA or Works Progress Administration, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art, of which he was a charter member, and the South Windsor Art League, which he founded in 1953.

Albertus Jones exhibited at various venues including the famous National Academy of Design, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club.  Throughout his life Jones won numerous awards for his work.  He won prizes at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art several years and also at the Connecticut Watercolor Society.  Jones is well represented with both oil and watercolor paintings at his local Wood Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Florence Griswold Museum.

Albertus Jones lived in South Windsor and Hamburg Cove, Connecticut.   He was a highly regarded landscape painter and WPA artist who studied with Charles Noel Flagg and at the Connecticut League of Art Students.  Jones himself was a teacher at the Randall School and The School For Creative Work, both in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jones exhibited and received prizes at The Connecticut Association of Fine Artists shows beginning in 1912 through 1934.   He also took prizes for his work at The Connecticut Watercolor Society in 1939, 1941, 1943, and 1944, at the Bridgeport Art League in 1944, The New Hampshire Paint and Clay Club in 1945, and at The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford in 1939.

Works by Albertus Eugene Jones are held in the collections of The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
