This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Nogales, Arizona, Elina Mix went east where she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts on a fellowship and was a student of Joseph Pearson, Charles Grafly, and Daniel Garber.

In Nogales, she was married to Hungarian immigrant Alexander Leroy Podwinetz Johnson, who had become a Captain in the United States Cavalry and was assigned to be part of the troops protecting the US border from Mexico.  They had two sons, and one of them, Alexander Johnson born 1918, became the first neurosurgeon in the Northern Rocky Mountain five-state region.

The family left Nogales and lived in many places including the Phillipines, Washington DC area and Fort Lewis in the state of Washington.  In Washington D.C. Elena was a member of the American Federation of the Arts.
