Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Portrait painter. Born in Cambridge, MA in 1890, "Aleck" was the nephew of writer Henry James. He studied painting while living with Abbott Thayer for six years and then further studied with Frank W. Benson. During the first two years of his marriage (1918-19) he lived and painted in Santa Barbara, CA. James then settled in Dublin, NH where he remained until his demise on Feb. 26, 1946. Member: Century Ass'n. In: MM; Filoli mansion in Woodside, CA (portrait of his brother-in-law Bruce Porter); Addison Gallery of Art; Boston Museum; Fogg Museum (Harvard). CD; Fid; WWAA 1936-41; NY Times, 2-27-1946 (obit).
