| Born in Frederikstad, Norway on Jan. 19, 1878. Johnson studied art at the University of Minnesota and the San Francisco Art Institute. While a resident of Westwood, he was director of the botanical garden at UCLA from 1927. While in this capacity he authored Taxonomy of Flowering Plants (1931). He died in Los Angeles on July 19, 1943.
