Of his work, Jackson said he liked to do paintings that function on more than one level. He painted prariescapes, cityscapes, and figurative works, often implying social commentary. Jackson was also a printmaker and mural painter.
Born 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, he received a Bachelor or Fine Arts degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1949, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1954.
