Of his work, Jackson said he liked to do paintings that function on more than one level. He painted  prariescapes, cityscapes, and figurative works, often implying social commentary. Jackson was also a printmaker and mural painter.

Born 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, he received a Bachelor or Fine Arts degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1949, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1954.

He served as Professor of Art at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from 1954 to 1987, when he became a full time painter; Professor Emeritus of the University from 1987 to 2006; President of Jackson Studios 1987 to 2006.

Jackson painted both regionally in the Midwest as well as in his studio on Martha’s Vineyard.

Evansville, IN Museum of Art, Butler Inst. of American Art, University of Illinois Life Retrospective.

Interpretations of Time and Light (University of IL Press 1990) chronicles 40 yrs. of Jackson’s Paintings, On this Island, a book of paintings of Martha’s Vineyard.
