| | Born in Fincastle, VA on Dec. 26, 1821. Eliza Griffin grew up in Louisville, KY and in 1843 married Albert Sidney Johnston. The couple then moved to Texas and led a peripatetic life while following military assignments. Her husband died a general in the Civil War, and the widow then lived in California from the early 1860s.
