Biography from AskART:
| A native of New York, Samuel Johnson was a painter in academic style who spent many years studying and exhibiting in Europe including Dusseldorf, Antwerp, and Paris. In the 1870s, he returned to the United States where he became professor of Art and Science at Fordham University and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1869, the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Academy of Art in the 1870s.
