Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gary Jenkins attended the Ringling School of Art for four years, and began working as a keyline artist for a greeting card company right after graduation. Subsequently, he worked for an art-store chain, and in the early 1970s became an art teacher and gallery painter. Jenkins then specialized in floral paintings, and in 1980 he was invited to host his own PBS television painting program, called "Jenkins Art Studio."
