While on scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Johnson was selected by the faculty to receive the Campbell Soup Company Scholarship in 1990. His awards also include two Purchase Prizes in 1992 and 1993 as well as the Philadelphia Water Color Club and the Morris Blackburn Landscape awards in 1993.
