This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Helen Nichols Jacobs is a painter of landscapes, seascapes and floral still lifes in American Impressionist style. She is the daughter of Spencer Baird Nichols, N.A. (1875-1950) and grew up in the world of art and artists. She is the granddaughter of Henry Hobart Nichols, a wood engraver who won a gold medal at the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia. Her uncle, Hobart Nichols was also an academician, and her daughter, Barbara J. Sussman is a landscape painter.

Helen Jacobs learned her sense of beauty, design and color in her studies with her father. She was also a student of Arthur Maynard, from whom she learned about the effects of light. Her work with him was a part of her many years of training at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, New Jersey for many years. She has also been an instructor in oil painting there for over twenty-five years until 1996 when she retired from teaching.

Using the light effects in nature as well as her own love of it, her goal is to evoke the memories of a fleeting moment of time and place in her landscapes and seascapes. She has won over seventy-five awards for these as well as her floral still lifes.

Jacobs is an elected artist member of the Kent Art Association and the Hudson Valley Artists as well as being a fellow of the American Artists Professional League and a life member of the Ridgewood Art Institute.
